U.S. Job Market Adds 177,000 Jobs, Holds Steady

U.S. employers added 177,000 jobs in April, down from 185,000 in March but beating economists’ 135,000 estimate, per the Labor Department. The unemployment rate stayed at 4.2%, showing resilience despite Trump’s tariffs. Transportation and warehousing added 29,000 jobs, healthcare 51,000, restaurants 17,000, while manufacturing shed 1,000. Economist Christopher Rupkey praised firms’ steadfastness amid tariff “storm clouds,” but warned of slowdown risks in 2025. Trump’s 145% China tariffs and erratic policies fuel recession concerns, with delayed impacts expected. The strong hiring offers short-term relief, but trade disruptions could soon challenge employment and growth, testing the economy’s durability.
