OpenAI to Maintain Ties With Scale AI After Meta Deal

OpenAI maintains its partnership with Scale AI despite Meta acquiring a 49% stake in the data-labeling startup for $14.8 billion. CFO Sarah Friar announced the decision at VivaTech in Paris while stressing that a wide range of vendors remains essential for AI development.

OpenAI depends on Scale AI to provide essential labeled datasets which enable the training of its large models including ChatGPT. OpenAI considers its partnership with Scale essential for its ongoing innovation despite Meta’s acquisition of a 49% stake in the company. According to Friar the separation of AI entities would create a slowdown in progress.

The superintelligence unit at Scale will be led by CEO Alexandr Wang through Meta’s investment. The company will maintain its board membership under Wang while Droege takes over as interim CEO.

OpenAI strengthens its academic partnerships with experts from history to hard sciences and specialists to develop robust models in the face of growing generative AI competition.

The evolution of models demands sophisticated data sources which a diverse vendor network enables to develop future AI breakthroughs according to Friar.
