Google Faces U.S. Push for Breakup in Search Monopoly Trial

Google faces legal challenges in a Washington courtroom beginning Monday because the U.S. government wants to break up the company for operating an unlawful search monopoly. The federal antitrust officials will present their case for blocking Google’s monopolistic tactics in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence during three weeks of hearings. The government through Justice Department attorney David Dahlquist declared this moment critical while asking whether search should belong to monopolists or if future generations should have competition and choice. The government requires a federal judge to stop Google from making its multibillion-dollar deals with Apple and others while forcing competitors to obtain data from Google and requiring the sale of Chrome.

The case presents the opportunity to transform the business structure of Google which used its search engine to establish dominance in digital markets. A negative court decision against Google would encourage both innovation and competition but a positive ruling would strengthen its market position which would affect user selection and the entire technology sector as AI emerges as the new competitive frontier.
