Meta has partnered with XGS Energy to build 150 megawatts of advanced geothermal power in New Mexico as part of its strategy to meet the increasing energy requirements for its artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The project will be built in phases until the end of the decade and will feed into the local power grid to power Meta’s operations in New Mexico. The project has a small capacity but it represents 4% of U.S. geothermal production and it is a sign of Big Tech’s growing interest in low-emission energy.
Geothermal energy has become a preferred option for technology giants who need clean and reliable power. Unlike traditional geothermal systems, the advanced version Meta is investing in does not depend on naturally occurring water sources, making it more scalable.
Meta’s global head of energy, Urvi Parekh, said next-generation geothermal could become a major contributor to powering data centers and emerging technologies like AI. “We’re excited to unlock a new category of energy supply,” she said in a statement.
New Mexico has a lot of geothermal potential—estimated at 160,000 megawatts—making it an attractive place for sustainable growth in the region.
